Fig. 1 · technical drawing generated from catalogue dimensions

There is a free photograph of five units in transparent packaging on a light background, and the packaging is what settles it. At a low threshold a membrane of background remains between the barrels; at a higher one the pale barrels dissolve — the beige and the pink go with the background, because they share its brightness.

The Sarasa Clip is a pen that is very hard to notice — and that is a property, not a complaint. A clear barrel of recycled plastic, a rubber grip, a knock, a gel refill running water-based pigment ink. The whole difference sits in the clip: instead of a rigid tab there is a lever on a U-shaped spring that opens far enough to take a thick stack of paper or the edge of a notebook.

The solution works, but it does not belong to this model. Zebra's chronology shows that in 2003 the movable clip entered two models at once — the Tapli Clip stood alongside the Sarasa. The clip is therefore a mark of the brand, not of this entry. We give no patent filing date, because we found no document confirming one; the bare existence of patent protection, with no number and no date, is not a claim that can be checked.

The figure that makes it a catalogue entry

What admitted this model was scale, and here Zebra behaves unusually: it separates the model's numbers from the series' numbers itself. The February 2021 announcement gives 800 million units as of September 2020, and the twentieth-anniversary announcement reports passing one billion as of March 2022.

Two things must be said plainly about those figures. First, they are 出荷実績 — shipments into the sales channel, not retail sales; a pen counted in that number may never have reached anyone's hand. Second, both releases attach the figure to the name サラサクリップ rather than to the series: the Grand, 3C, R, Nano and Dry have their own releases and their own numbers at the maker. That is rare precision for press material, and it is exactly why the figure is quotable at all.

A detail for anyone checking the source: the anniversary announcement's address contains the string 20230822, but the date in the page body is 22 September. The slug is a month out.

The refill has the same name and does not always fit

The factory refill is the JF, sold at retail as the RJF5. The maker's official compatibility list is short and worth knowing, because the name on the packaging can mislead: JF refills serve only the Sarasa, Sarasa Clip, Sarasa Grand and Sarasa Nano. The Sarasa R runs on the JRV and the Sarasa Dry on the JLV. Three different formats under one trade name.

The second storey of the confusion is markets. Zebra's US refill guide does not use the JF designation at all and works with the JK code — a code read off Japanese packaging does not carry into that catalogue.

Since 1 August 2024 two components have been made from sugarcane bioplastic: the refill tube and part of the barrel's grip. The maker states that the new bio JF-0.5 refill can be used in place of the previous one — the change concerns the material, not the fit.

What we could not confirm

The model has no design award. The Good Design gallery, the maker's announcements and the collections of MoMA, Cooper Hewitt and the Design Museum were all checked — it appears in none of them. Zebra's 2019 awards went to the bLen and the Clickart, and the announcement of them does not mention the Sarasa at all.

Nor is there any trace outside stationery. The only non-commercial threads — an edition tied to a charity drive and a 2017 colour poll — are the maker's own marketing.

Longevity fails arithmetically rather than for want of evidence: in 2026 the model is twenty-three years old against a twenty-five-year threshold. The threshold falls in 2028 and content validation flags it on every build, so the verdict does not go stale unnoticed.

The enthusiast canon here rests on a single outlet. The model has been on its list since 2015 and holds a place there through the October 2025 update, which is genuine continuity — but it is one address's canon, not the field's, and should be read that way.

JF-0.5

The factory refill is the JF, sold at retail as the RJF5. The maker's official compatibility list covers exactly four bodies: Sarasa, Sarasa Clip, Sarasa Grand and Sarasa Nano. Since 1 August 2024 the refill tube has been made from sugarcane bioplastic while keeping the code and dimensions, so both versions are mutually interchangeable.

Legend rubric

Criteria met 2 of 7

A model qualifies on at least two criteria. Every criterion marked as met must cite a source.

  • Longevity

    not met

A 2003 launch gives twenty-three years in 2026 against a twenty-five-year threshold — the criterion fails arithmetically, not for want of evidence. The threshold falls in 2028 and content validation flags it on every build. The Sarasa line itself is older (launched 2000), but that is a different model without the movable clip, so line-level evidence does not score.

  • Design recognition

    not met

The Good Design Award gallery, the maker's award announcements and the collections of MoMA, Cooper Hewitt and the Design Museum were all searched. The model appears in none of them. Zebra's documented design awards belong to other models: the bLen and Clickart took Good Design 2019, and the maker's announcement of 4 October 2019 does not mention the Sarasa at all.

  • Technical first

    not met

The movable clip is a Zebra solution but not this model’s debut. The maker’s chronology records that in 2003 it was adopted in two models at once, the Tapli Clip and the Sarasa Clip, so even at launch it was not exclusive to this entry. We give no patent filing date: we found no document confirming one.

  • Cultural footprint

    not met

A role in film or television, in the space programme, in a historic event, or in a non-design museum was sought. Nothing was found. The only non-commercial threads stay inside the category and are the maker's own marketing: an edition tied to a charity drive and a 2017 colour poll.

  • Scale

    metprimary source

A rare case in which the maker itself separates model from series. The announcement of 8 February 2021 describes the Sarasa series and states separately that its flagship product reached 8億本, that is 800 million units, as of September 2020. The announcement of 22 September 2023, marking twenty years, speaks of passing 10億本, one billion, as of March 2022. Both figures are 出荷実績 — shipments into the sales channel rather than retail sales — and must be read that way. The scope covers the model with its colour variants, excluding the Grand, 3C, R, Nano and Dry, which the maker counts separately.

  • Enthusiast canon

    metsecondary source

A steady position in one outlet's recommendations across a decade: a review of 22 September 2015, then presence on a continuously updated top-five list — fourth place in December 2015, second from 2018 through to the update of 21 October 2025. Archive snapshots confirm continuity every two or three years. A qualification worth recording: this is one outlet's canon, not the whole community's.

  • Practice influence

    not met

All three permitted routes were checked. There is no parts market for this model: the JF refill is not a format created for the Sarasa Clip but fits the common Japanese gel-refill size, and refills from several other makers go into the body — interchangeability is a property of the whole category, not of this model. Neither a modification culture nor a document of institutional adoption was found.

Evidence outside the score

Applies to the product line or the brand, not to this model. Does not count toward the score.

  • Technical first evidence applies to: the brand

At brand level the solution is a genuine distinguishing feature: a sprung clip gripping a thicker stack of paper than a rigid one entered Zebra’s range in 2003 in two models at once and spread across its own catalogue. This is context rather than a point — the evidence concerns the brand, not this model.
