Jetstream (standard)
The candidates divide into the Latin phrase "in hoc signo", the Spanish surname Signo, and the British Aerospace Jetstream 41 aircraft. The one clean photograph of a pen in the pool shows a uni-ball Signo DX, a gel pen from a different line — the barrel print settles it unambiguously.
The Jetstream is the pen that started the entire category of low-viscosity oil-based inks — and that is its real, independently confirmed contribution to history. The rest of the received story needs corrections.
This entry covers the standard line (SXN-150 and kin). Not to be confused with the variants: Jetstream Prime (from 2013, SXR-200 and Parker-style SXR-600 refills) or Jetstream Edge (from 2019, 0.28 mm ball) — their awards and launches do not belong to the base model.
Two launch dates
The Jetstream did not debut in Japan in 2006, as the manufacturer consistently states. First, in November 2003, a capped version launched on overseas markets. The push-button version known today reached Japan in July 2006 — after a separate ink was developed for the retractable mechanism. Mitsubishi Pencil's communications omit the overseas debut; we give the 2003 date after Japanese sources outside the manufacturer and flag the discrepancy plainly.
The consequence for the rubric is unforgiving: even counting from 2003, the model is 23 years old — under the 25-year threshold of uninterrupted production. The longevity criterion fails today; it can pass in 2028 at the earliest.
Priority confirmed out of a competitor's mouth
"The first low-viscosity oil-based ink" would be an ordinary manufacturer's self-claim, were it not confirmed by the competition. Pilot's own site dates its first low-viscosity pen — the Acroball with Acro ink — to 2008, two years after the Jetstream's Japanese debut. The trade press describes the wave of low-viscosity models from every maker as a response to its success. This is exactly the kind of evidence we require for a technical first: dating independent of the interested party.
The construction itself is remarkably stable: per the manufacturer's own announcement, adding new barrel colours in January 2024 was the first expansion of the palette since launch — seventeen years without a change.
The numbers that do not exist
Mitsubishi Pencil has never published a cumulative sales figure for the Jetstream. The boilerplate in its releases repeats only "over 100 million units a year worldwide for the whole series" — an annual, series-level number. Multiplying it by years would be our arithmetic, not a source, so the scale criterion stays unmet. A cumulative figure may exist in investor materials — the public newsroom has none.
The design awards belong to variants: Good Design 2020 went to the Edge, Good Design 2023 to the ocean-plastic version. The base model has never won one. We show both records as line context, outside the score.
A canon with a crack
Wirecutter has recommended the Jetstream continuously from its first pen guide of September 2013 through the November 2025 update — with "A Wirecutter pick since 2013" stated outright. The continuity hides a shift of object: the original pick covered the line generally, the current one is specifically the retractable RT variant, still with the same ink.
The Pen Addict is split: a recommendation of the 0.5 in 2008, but a 2011 review of the 0.7 faulted the ink for blobbing and ranked gels like the EnerGel above it. The presence in the discourse is continuous — the verdicts are not. We record both.

The standard body (SXN-150 and relatives: SXN-250, SXN-1000, SXN-2200, ocean-plastic version) takes SXR-38/-5/-7/-10 refills (digit = ball diameter), also sold in paper packaging as SXR-L-5/-L-7. Other Jetstream bodies use other SXR sub-families (SXR-80 — multicolor, SXR-89 — Style Fit, SXR-200 — Prime multicolor, SXR-203 — Edge, SXR-600 — Prime twist); the sub-families are not interchangeable.

not metThe knock-type has been sold in Japan since July 2006 (the manufacturer consistently states 2006, domestic market); the original cap-type for overseas markets dates to November 2003. Even counted from 2003 that is roughly 22–23 years of continuous production — below the 25-year threshold. The standard model's construction is notably stable: per the manufacturer's December 2023 release, expanding the barrel-colour lineup was the first such change since the 2006 launch.

not metI searched the Good Design Award organizer's database via its API (queries Jetstream and ジェットストリーム): the only records are JETSTREAM EDGE (2020, no. 20G030123) and JETSTREAM RECYCLED OCEAN PLASTIC (2023, no. 23G030106) — no award covers the 2006 base model. Queries against the MoMA and Cooper Hewitt collections returned no accession record for a Jetstream pen.

not metI searched for third-party parts made for the Jetstream body, for a named Jetstream mod, and for a document showing institutional issue. None of the three exists. What does exist is a substantial, genuine practice concerning the REFILL rather than the pen: the SXR-600 is built to the Parker standard and goes into other makers' bodies, Tactile Turn publishes instructions for trimming a Jetstream refill to work in their Mover, and community refill-swap guides list Jetstream alongside G2, Signo 207 and Sarasa as one interchangeable insert fitted with a spacer. The decisive point is how those guides are organised: their sections are titled after the HOST bodies (Lamy Safari, Karas Kustoms Render K, Fisher Space Pen), with Jetstream appearing only as filler. The object people build on and modify is somebody else's pen; Jetstream supplies its consumable. That is precisely the excluded case of a universal refill fitting by dimensional standard rather than a part made for this model. The model as an object remains unmodified. Not met for the model.
