Hi-Tec-C Coleto (ハイテックCコレト)
Twelve candidates, mostly sports photographs of a figure skater named Koleto. The model's name is exceptionally unhelpful to a search engine here, and after viewing every file we found not one containing a pen.
The Coleto is a multi-function pen with a modular architecture: the barrel is bought separately from the individual single-colour refills. Launched 1 October 2005.
The entry fills a gap the catalogue has had from the start — the only multi-pen until now was the BIC 4 Couleurs, a closed construction with four refills fixed by the manufacturer.
The award went to a far more modest product than today's
Good Design record 06A10006 from 2006 describes the Coleto as a two-colour pen with ten refill colours in 0.3 and 0.4 mm. Today's system comprises three-, four- and five-colour barrels and forty-nine refill items.
The award therefore covers the base model — which is why we count it — but it describes a product today's user would not recognise.
The Coleto has three separate records in the database, each with a different designer: the base model of 2006 (Momoko Yoshida and Kumiko Yagyu), the Lumio of 2012 (Akinori Ikeda), the Coleto 1000 of 2015 (Satoshi Watase). Yoshida reappears in the 2015 record on the product-planning side rather than design.
Chronology settles it without trusting the self-claim
Pilot describes itself as "first in the industry". There is no need to take that on faith, because competitors' dates are public and line up unambiguously:

- uni Style Fit — dated by Mitsubishi Pencil itself to 2009
- Zebra Prefill — 2012
Three and a half years ahead of the first imitator, with four manufacturers in the same architecture, is sufficient evidence of priority.
An architectural standard, not an interface one
This distinction is the heart of the entry and its most useful practical information.
Competitors copied the idea, not the dimensions. Each of the four systems is closed and mutually incompatible; Pilot's instructions state plainly that barrel and refills are for the Coleto exclusively. A Style Fit refill will not go into a Coleto barrel, or the reverse — even though both products realise the same concept.
Buying a barrel therefore means committing to one refill manufacturer for the life of the pen. That is the kind of information a site about pens earns trust with, which is why it also sits in the refill standard's description.
Worth recording alongside: the category can vanish. Zebra withdrew the Prefill in 2018 and replaced it with the Sarasa Select system. The Coleto endures not because competitors did not try.
The construction is not continuous
The Coleto 1000, introduced in October 2014, replaced the finger-opened flap with a push mechanism. The base barrel got its own rebuild on 15 September 2017: a rubber grip, a new opening mechanism and a widened refill aperture.
What changed is precisely the element that defines the product — how it is loaded. The longevity criterion therefore fails, and will not pass automatically with the passage of years; the count would have to start again.
What is missing
Scale. Pilot publishes no per-model figures, including in anniversary announcements and at the 2017 refresh. Any "hundreds of millions" number here would be invented.
Practice influence is missing too, contrary to appearances. Coleto modifications exist, but they are hobbyist and run both ways: a blogger trims a uni Style Fit 0.28 mm refill to fit a Coleto barrel, while a video shows the reverse, a Coleto refill in a three-colour Jetstream barrel. No company manufactures parts for the Coleto, so the criterion stays unmet.

A closed, proprietary standard: Pilot's own catalogue sheet describes the refill as "ハイテックCコレトシリーズ専用" (for the Hi-Tec-C Coleto series only). Writing refills are LHKRF-10C3 / -10C4 / -10C5 (0.3 / 0.4 / 0.5 mm ball, water-based biopolymer gel ink). For its bodies Pilot also lists the units LHKRF10S4, LHKRF-18H5, LHKRF-18H3 and LHKRF-28E; the system additionally accepts a mechanical-pencil unit, a retractable eraser unit and a now-discontinued stylus unit. Colour range: 15 standard colours in all three tip sizes plus 18 special colours (6 pastel, 6 metallic, 6 fluorescent) in 0.4 mm only — 33 in total. Longevity
not metBase model launched 1 October 2005 (Good Design record 06A10006), i.e. about 20 years and 10 months of production as of August 2026 — short of the 25-year threshold. Construction continuity is also broken: the Coleto 1000 variant (launched 10/2014, GD record 15G010051) introduced a new push-button head mechanism for one-handed refill swaps, and the base body itself was renewed on 15 September 2017 with a rubber grip, a new one-handed cap-opening mechanism and a widened refill slot. The exact node that defines the product — how refills are loaded — is what changed. No manufacturer statement of unchanged construction since 2005 was found; Pilot's own releases document the successive mechanism changes.

Only afterwards did all three major Japanese rivals adopt the same architecture: Pentel Sliccies — announced 20 February 2009 as the multi-colour version of Slicci, 2- and 3-colour bodies plus 15 refill colours to choose from (ITmedia, 2009-02-20); Mitsubishi Pencil uni Style Fit — the maker itself dates the launch to 2009 and still sells it as holder plus refills; Zebra Prefill — 2012, 57 refills at launch and 78 at the end, produced until 2018, then replaced by Sarasa Select. Pilot does call itself the industry's first (2017 release), but the verdict rests on the competitor chronology, not on that claim. Cultural footprint
not metI looked for a documented role for the Coleto outside stationery: presence in visual-culture scholarship, thematic museum exhibitions, institutional or mission documentation, film, literature, or as a vehicle of a social phenomenon. Nothing was found for this model. Everything located sits inside stationery: Pilot press releases, magazine collaborations and limited runs, writing-focused articles. The nearest adjacent thread concerns the Hi-Tec-C BRAND rather than the Coleto model — the post-1998 shift of its user base toward junior- and senior-high-school students as the colour range expanded — but that is still a description of writing practice, hence still stationery, and not about the model under assessment. Criterion not met.

not metI searched for a cumulative unit figure for the Coleto model itself: in Pilot press releases (including anniversary items and the 2017 renewal), in the company's centenary materials, and in Japanese trade and business press, using terms for cumulative shipments and unit counts. No figure was found, for the model or the line. Pilot does not publish per-model sales, and corporate reporting aggregates the whole writing-instruments category. There is therefore no basis to assert hundreds of millions of units, and I will not multiply an annual figure by years, as that would be my arithmetic rather than a source. Not met for lack of evidence, which is not the same as evidence of absence.

not metBoth conditions named in the brief were checked. (1) A market of third-party parts or refills made specifically for the Coleto: not found. No maker produces Coleto-compatible refills, and no maker produces bodies for Coleto refills — I searched Japanese handmade marketplaces and wooden-body pen makers, who build for other, open refill formats instead. Pilot closes the system explicitly in the manual: bodies and refills are stated to be Coleto-only and unusable with other products; and rather than making Coleto-fitting parts, competitors built their own mutually incompatible systems (Sliccies, Style Fit, Prefill, Sarasa Select). (2) A documented, repeatable modification culture with instructions: it exists but too thinly. I verified one dated instructional post (Takubeya blog, 22 August 2016 — trimming a uni Style Fit 0.28 mm refill to fit a Coleto body) and one video showing the reverse operation, a Coleto refill in a Jetstream 3-colour body. These are scattered hobbyist instances, not an organised modification culture with a settled canon. (3) No institutional adoption document was found. Separately, "assembling your own set" cannot count here: it is the manufacturer's intended mode of use, not a user-devised practice working against the design. Reviews are deliberately excluded — that is what enthusiast-canon is for. Not met.
