Pentel
R.S.V.P.
The model is identified beyond doubt in the photograph — six barrels carry the gold print "Pentel R.S.V.P." and "MADE IN USA". What rules it out is the background: a polished wooden desktop with pronounced grain, light reflections and other objects at the edge of the frame.
The R.S.V.P. is cheap, clear and short of the qualities that usually admit a model to a catalogue like this one. No award, no patent, no units-sold figure, no place on any recommendation list. What it has instead is something no other entry on this site has: a documented market for its barrel as a spare part.
The pen that became a spare part
The user-practice criterion is the hardest to prove in this catalogue, and here it is proven better than for any other model.
In the pen-spinning community — spinning a pen between the fingers — the R.S.V.P. barrel is raw material. There is a named mod, the RSVP MX, with a dated tutorial from 19 November 2008 and a credited author, in which the teardown begins by removing this pen's cap, back plug, grip and ink tube. The community wiki keeps a dedicated article for the model with a list of derivatives. A shop serving that community has a category of mods built on this one barrel running to thirty-five items, and sells the pen itself and its cap separately — as parts. A second shop states on those items that the goods are meant for spinning between the fingers, not for writing.
Two things need stating precisely. First, the donor is the capped stick, not the retractable version; the wiki explicitly excludes the latter as sharing neither barrel nor structure. Second, none of this evidence is a review or an editorial recommendation — which is precisely why it counts as practice rather than canon. That is the condition separating the two criteria in the rubric.
The year 1994 applies to one code
Two independent documents hold the launch date. The archived "Pentel Innovations" page from 1998 lists the year beside the BK90 code and describes the model as Pentel's first economical ball-point pen manufactured and assembled in the States. The trademark register closes the date from below: the application of 30 March 1994 was filed intent-to-use, that is under a declaration that the mark was not yet in commerce, with first use declared as 1 August 1994.
The year applies to the 0.7 mm version alone, though. The BK91 code with the 1.0 mm tip appears in documents only in the 2009 catalogue, so its own launch date remains unestablished.
Nor do we write that the model has been produced "without interruption". Continuity is an inference from several documents at once — accepted statutory filings from 2003, two renewals of the mark in 2007 and 2017, and a chain of catalogue snapshots from 1998 through 2009 to the maker's shop today. The maker itself makes no such declaration anywhere, and absence of evidence of a break is not evidence of continuity.
The maker confuses its own refills
The BK91 product page on Pentel of America's site says to "just pop in a Pentel BKL7 refill". The BKL7 is a 0.7 mm refill and the BK91 has a 1.0 mm tip — so the pen page names a refill of a different width from the pen itself. The refill page settles it: the BKL10 is described there as made exclusively for the BK91.
The practical lesson reaches beyond this model: when buying a replacement, follow the refill page rather than the pen page.
A separate curiosity concerns Europe. The BKL7 refill is available in the Pentel UK catalogue, but described as a part for entirely different bodies — the BK77, BK77AB, BK401 and BK127 — with no mention of the R.S.V.P. The reason is simple: that catalogue's search returns zero products for "RSVP". The model is simply absent from the maker's European range, and European offers come from resellers.
What we could not confirm
The dimensions — 156 mm long, 9 mm across, 11 g — come from a Japanese specialist shop's product page, not from the maker. Pentel publishes no dimensions for this model in any of the catalogues checked: American, Canadian or British. We found no second independent measurement. Nor do we give refill lengths: the figure that surfaces in search results comes from a retailer's shipping fields and describes the packaging.
There is no design award — the iF, Red Dot and Good Design databases and the holdings of design museums were checked. There is no patent or design registration attributed to this barrel; the 1998 page speaks of an advanced ergonomic design, but without attribution and without a claim of priority, and the rubber grip zone was present at several makers at the same time. There is no designer's name in any document. There is no public units-sold figure. And there is no country of manufacture for today's units — the 1998 document speaks of production in the USA, and no current page says anything.
Two out of seven. For a pen whose entire standing comes from someone taking it apart and building something else out of it, that is an honest record.

The 0.7 mm version (BK90) takes the BKL7 refill. In Pentel's European catalogue that same refill is listed as a part for entirely different bodies, the BK77, BK77AB, BK401 and BK127, with no mention of the R.S.V.P., because the model is absent from that catalogue. The 1.0 mm version (BK91) takes the BKL10. Note: the maker's page for the BK91 says to just pop in a BKL7 refill, that is a 0.7 mm refill into a 1.0 mm tip. This is an error on the maker's side; the refill's own page settles it, describing the BKL10 as made exclusively for the BK91. We give no refill lengths, because no document of the maker's states them.
Legend rubric
Criteria met 2 of 7
A model qualifies on at least two criteria. Every criterion marked as met must cite a source.
Longevity
metprimary sourceThe starting point rests on two independent documents: the maker's archived 1998 page ties 1994 directly to the BK90 code, and the trademark register declares first use in commerce on 1 August 1994. Continuity rests on accepted statutory filings from 2003, two renewals of the mark in 2007 and 2017, and a chain of catalogue snapshots from 1998 through 2009 to the maker's shop today. It is not a quotation from any one document but an inference from several: the maker nowhere declares uninterrupted production, so neither do we use that word. Thirty-two years against a twenty-five-year threshold.

Design recognition
not metThe iF, Red Dot and Good Design databases and the holdings of design museums were searched. The model appears in none of them. The maker claims no award for this entry, either on current product pages or in archived materials.
Technical first
not metThe maker's archived page speaks of an advanced ergonomic barrel design, but without attribution and without a claim of priority. The rubber grip zone was present at several makers at the same time. No patent or design registration attributed to this barrel was found.

Cultural footprint
not metA trace in film, television, the space programme, historic events and non-design museums was sought. Nothing was found for this model.
Scale
not metNo public units-sold figure exists for this model. Pentel does not publish volumes broken down by model.
Enthusiast canon
not metThe model does not appear on the recommendation lists of the outlets that establish canon in this category. The texts found are either one-off or concern the retractable version, a different catalogue entry from the maker.
Practice influence
metprimary sourceThe best-documented instance of this criterion in the whole catalogue. There is a named mod, the RSVP MX, with a dated tutorial from 19 November 2008 and a credited author, in which the teardown begins with this barrel. The pen-spinning community wiki keeps a dedicated article for the model with a list of derivatives, and a shop serving that community has a category of mods built on this one barrel running to thirty-five items, selling the pen itself and its cap separately as parts. A second shop states on those items that the goods are meant for spinning between the fingers, not for writing. The donor is the capped stick: the wiki explicitly excludes the retractable version as sharing neither barrel nor structure. None of this evidence is a review or an editorial recommendation, and that is the condition separating it from canon.
