Fig. 1 · technical drawing generated from catalogue dimensions

Commons holds one file matching this name, and it is not a product photograph but an everyday-carry flat-lay: some twenty objects on a dark lacquered desk. The model can be neither isolated from it nor confirmed.

The pico is a pocket ballpoint with a telescopic action: pressing the button at the rear simultaneously deploys the tip and extends the barrel from 94 to 124 mm. It has no clip — a slightly raised Lamy logo does the work of stopping it rolling off a desk. Designed by Franco Clivio.

The launch year, and why it is not a detail

The date 2001 circulated on the strength of the German Wikipedia alone, without a citation. A manufacturer document settles it: the Internet Archive preserves a C. Josef Lamy GmbH press release from February 2001 ending with the line Erhältlich ab Mai 2001 im Fachhandel. Market launch was May 2001.

The iF award dated 2002 is the competition year, not the introduction year — products entered for iF 2002 had already been on sale for a year. The distinction carries real weight here: dated 2002, the model would not yet have reached twenty-five years of uninterrupted production and would fail the rubric. The whole assessment of that criterion rests on one sentence in a press release, and the original file has disappeared from the manufacturer's site — only an archived copy survives.

The designer denies his own design the status of an invention

iF record 21148 describes "Pico" as a pocket ballpoint pen in the Product Design / Office/Stationery category, with C. Josef Lamy as client and Franco Clivio as designer. The record concerns this pen precisely — worth noting, because the red dot database lists entirely unrelated products from other companies under the name "Pico".

In an interview published by iF, however, Clivio says plainly that the pico is a copy — a redesign of an object he found at a flea market, and that he simply remembered he already had a model for it. The same piece credits him with a solution that genuinely did become an industry standard — the Gardena garden hose coupling system of 1968 — but that is not a writing instrument.

The manufacturer claims two further honours on its own pages: a red dot award and the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland of 2004. We found no matching record in either awarding body's database. We do not count them until they are confirmed.

The M 22 refill: compatibility pointing inward

The M 22 compact refill was developed specifically for the pico. The 2001 release gives a writing range of about 3,000 metres, in two colours and two line widths.

More interesting is the refill's protective cap, which does double duty: fitted to the rear, it lets the M 22 go into other Lamy pens as well. The direction of compatibility is thus the reverse of an industry standard — other Lamy models accept the pico's refill, rather than the market accepting Lamy's format. For the owner this means the refill is easy to find within the brand and essentially unavailable outside it.

Other formats can be made to work only conditionally, and none of these methods is envisaged by the manufacturer. The short D1 refill is sometimes seated from the cone end; a Parker-format refill has to be cut down to M 22 length, which leaves the rear end open and needing to be plugged — irreversible, and carrying a leak risk.

Scale is out of reach arithmetically

Lamy publishes no per-model sales figures, but brand-level numbers settle the question. The company speaks of more than seven to eight million writing instruments a year across roughly 250 catalogue lines. The entire brand, across the pico's whole lifetime, does not approach hundreds of millions of units — and the pico is one of those 250 lines.

This is not missing data. It is a negative finding.

Changes over time

The construction has survived a quarter century; essentially only the surface has changed. In 2001 the pico came in three finishes: pearl chrome, polished chrome and black powder coating. From October 2003 brass versions with soft lacquer were added, and the trade designation "model 288" appears, still in use today. The current range covers lacquered and chrome versions plus the pico Lx in a ruthenium finish.

A discrepancy between manufacturer statements concerns legal status, not construction: in February 2001 Lamy describes the mechanism as patent-pending, by September 2003 as patented. Neither release gives a patent number, and we could not establish one.

Refill

Standard
LAMY M 22
Factory code
M 22

The pico takes only the LAMY M 22 compact ballpoint refill, which LAMY calls a "Compact ballpoint pen refill for LAMY pico and LAMY scribble". It is roughly 60 mm long with a metal body, oil-based ink that LAMY describes as waterproof, in F, M and B point widths and black or blue ink. Retail listings state the refill is made in Germany. There is no ready-made third-party refill in the exact M22 format, and the M22 is not interchangeable with LAMY's own M 16 (Parker/G2 format) refill. In short: the pico natively accepts no other refill standard — every alternative documented online is a user-side modification.

Refills that fit

  • D1reportedA Fountain Pen Network user reports that a short "mini D1" refill can be seated in the pico if it is inserted through the nose of the barrel rather than from the back, citing measurements of roughly 2.2 mm for the M22 and 2.3 mm for the mini D1. This is not anticipated or confirmed by LAMY, and standard-length D1 refills would need to be shortened. Treat it as a user modification, not a factory-supported swap.
  • Parker G2reportedThe Picky Pens site describes cutting a G2 (Parker-format) refill down to M22 length. Once shortened the rear end of the refill is open and has to be plugged with plastic, tape or wax, which carries a leak risk. No manufacturer confirmation; the modification destroys the donor refill.

Legend rubric

Criteria met 4 of 7

A model qualifies on at least two criteria. Every criterion marked as met must cite a source.

  • Longevity

    metprimary source

The disputed launch year resolves to 2001 on manufacturer evidence, not Wikipedia. C. Josef Lamy's own February 2001 press release (200102_pico.html in the lamy.de press section) ends: "Erhältlich ab Mai 2001 im Fachhandel und in Fachabteilungen ausgewählter Warenhäuser" — on sale from May 2001. The 2002 iF award is the competition cycle year, not the launch year. Construction is essentially unchanged: the 2001 release describes the 9 cm to 12 cm extension, the push mechanism that simultaneously deploys the writing tip, and a newly developed Compactmine rated at roughly 3,000 m; LAMY's current product page states the same double push mechanism and the same LAMY M 22 refill. The trade designation "model 288" has run from the 2003 release to today. As of August 2026 that is 25 years and 3 months of continuous catalogue presence. Only finishes changed: 2001 offered pearl chrome, polished chrome and black powder coating; brass with soft lacquer colours was added in 2003.

  • Design recognition

    metprimary source

The award organizer's own database record is confirmed and covers exactly this product, not a different variant. iF Design record 21148 lists: year 2002, category Product Design / Office/Stationery, project name "Pico", product description "Pocket ballpoint pen", client C. Josef Lamy, Heidelberg (DE), design Franco Clivio, Erlenbach (CH). The award therefore went to the pocket ballpoint, not to a fountain pen or an unrelated product of the same name (the red dot database returns unrelated "Pico" products from other companies). A second, weaker leg: LAMY's own corporate-culture page credits the pico with the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 2004, but that is a manufacturer self-declaration and I found no record in the organizer's database. I also found no museum holding: the V&A collection API returns zero records for "Lamy pico", and Cooper Hewitt returns no hits. The criterion is met via the award route, not the museum route.

  • Technical first

    not met

I looked for evidence that the pico's telescoping mechanism became an industry standard, and found the opposite — from the designer himself. In an iF-published interview (July 2023, conversation recorded November 2016) Franco Clivio says: "The Pico is actually a copy – a redesign if you will – of an object I found at a flea market." Telescoping pocket pens therefore predate it; the pico refines the type rather than originating it. The mechanism was protected, not shared: in 2001 LAMY describes a "zum Patent angemeldete" lift mechanism, by 2003 a "patentierte Druckmechanik mit Hubverlängerung" — patent protection is the opposite of an industry standard. The second candidate, the Compactmine M 22, is a house standard rather than a market one: LAMY deliberately designed the refill cap as an adapter so the M 22 also fits other LAMY ballpoints, and reviewers (Pen Addict, Gentleman Stationer) treat the proprietary M 22 as a limitation. By contrast iF credits the same designer with something that genuinely did become a standard — the 1968 Gardena hose coupling system — but that is not a writing instrument. I found no independent source stating that anyone outside LAMY adopted either the mechanism or the refill format.

  • Cultural footprint

    not met

I searched for a documented role outside stationery: use on a space mission, at a state occasion or treaty signing, a scripted role in a film, or status as a subculture icon. I found nothing in any of these categories. The only documented community is the EDC (everyday carry) scene — the Everyday Carry editorial team covered the pico in June 2020 as a "solid EDC option" for its closed size, all-metal body and no-fuss refill. That is still the carry-and-stationery domain, precisely the domain the criterion requires evidence to leave. There is no evidence of the pico in popular culture, a public ceremony, or a film narrative.

  • Scale

    not met

I looked for a cumulative sales or production figure for the pico model itself — a manufacturer statement, an annual report, an interview with a number. No public model-level figure exists; LAMY does not publish per-model data. Only brand-level figures are available, and they settle the question immediately: the Moodie Davitt Report states Lamy produces over seven million writing instruments a year across 250 SKUs, and Forbes (June 2021) over eight million a year across more than 25 collections. Even the entire brand's cumulative output over the pico's 25 years sits in the region of ~200 million units across all models, and the pico is one of roughly 250 SKUs. The "hundreds of millions for the model" threshold is unreachable here by definition, and multiplying an annual figure by years would be my arithmetic, not a source.

  • Enthusiast canon

    metsecondary source

Four independent editorial outlets, specific dated articles, spanning at least 2014-2020, including repeat coverage by the same outlet. The Pen Addict (Brad Dowdy) covered the pico three times: 19 May 2014 ("close to the perfect every day carry ballpoint"), 29 June 2016 (Laser Orange), and 21 August 2017 (Pearl Chrome, "it is one of the best pocket pens on the market today"). The Gentleman Stationer ran a full review on 27 April 2017. The Gadgeteer (Julie Strietelmeier) compared the pico with the Ohto Rook on 26 September 2014. Everyday Carry published an editorial piece by Bernard Capulong on 22 June 2020. The Pens and Junk blog added a 22 June 2020 review — weaker evidence, a personal blog, but it confirms continuity. I deliberately excluded JetPens, Cult Pens and the Gentleman Stationer curated shop: those are evidence of distribution, not canon. The repeat coverage (Pen Addict returning three times in four years) and the consistent editorial verdict — distinctive mechanism, reservations about the proprietary M 22 refill — amount to durable presence in community recommendations, though not to cult status comparable with the Safari or the 2000.

  • Practice influence

    metsecondary source

I confirmed a repeatable refill-modification practice for the pico, documented in two independent places. The FPN thread "Questions On The Lamy Pico" contains a measured, reproducible procedure: a user fits a mini D1 (Schmidt 635) into the pico, gives the diameters (M22 about 2.2 mm, mini D1 about 2.3 mm) and the key detail — the refill goes in through the nose, not the back. Picky Pens documents the second variant of the same practice: cutting a G2 or D1 refill down to M22 length using the original as a gauge, with a sharp knife, leaving slack and plugging the tail with plastic, tape or wax because exposed gel leaks. That is instruction, not review. Caveats: the M22 format is shared with the Scribble, Agenda and Pickup, so part of the material is format-level; documentation is thin (one thread plus one how-to), there is no named "mod" and no maker of parts built specifically for the pico — non-OEM M22 hits are shop listings (eBay) only, which I do not count. No institutional adoption.
